The M39 cannon was a single-barrel weapon that had a rate of fire of only 250 rounds per minute. The M61 was designed to be a much faster and more reliable weapon that could fire at a rate of up to 6,000 rounds per minute. The M61 was first introduced into service in 1959 on the F-104 Starfighter. Since then, it has been used on a wide variety of fighter aircraft, including the F-4 Phantom II, F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F/A-18 Hornet, and the F-22 Raptor.
