 The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is a United States federal law enforcement agency tasked with enforcing controlled substance laws and regulations. It was created on July 1, 1973, as a result of the Reorganization Plan No. 2 of 1973, signed by President Richard Nixon. The DEA is the only agency in the United States that has the authority to conduct drug interdiction operations overseas. The DEA was created in response to the growing drug abuse problem in the United States, particularly the abuse of heroin and other narcotics. In the 1960s and early 1970s, drug abuse was rampant in many American cities, and law enforcement agencies were struggling to keep up with the increasing demand for drugs.
