History of the M16 The M16 was first adopted by the US military in 1963, during the early years of the Vietnam War. However, the rifle's introduction was not without controversy. During its early deployments, soldiers reported a number of problems with the M16, including jamming, misfires, and a lack of stopping power. One of the primary causes of these problems was the ammunition used with the rifle. The M16 was originally designed to fire the M193 5.56x45mm cartridge, which had a lightweight 55-grain bullet
