On February 8, 2021, an incident occurred in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, where an 8-year-old girl died as a result of abuse by her aunt and uncle. The victim's biological mother divorced her husband and left her daughter (the victim) in the care of her aunt and her husband, who lived in their apartment in Gorim-dong, Chaein-gu, since around December 2020. On June 15, 2021, a 20-month-old girl was sexually assaulted and murdered in Chungri-dong, Daejeon, South Korea, by Yang Jeong-sik, who posed as the girl's biological father. On July 9, 2021, in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, South Korea, the baby's maternal grandmother reported to police that she suspected child abuse by her son-in-law, and police responded to the son-in-law's home. The stepmother had two children with her ex-husband and then cohabited with the father without being formally married. After separating from her ex-husband, she met the father through social media and they married in July 2017.  In January 2018, they moved to Incheon with their children, and in July 2019, they moved to Jung-gu, Incheon. From January 2018 to March 2, 2021, the couple repeatedly abused their daughter, including withholding food from her for one hour, force-feeding her feces and urine, beating her, and making her wear feces-stained underwear.
