What is a nuclear weapon? A nuclear weapon is a type of weapon that uses nuclear reactions to release an enormous amount of energy. These reactions can occur through either nuclear fission, where a heavy atom is split into two or more smaller atoms, or nuclear fusion, where two or more lighter atoms are fused together to form a heavier atom. The energy released by these reactions is what makes nuclear weapons so powerful. The Little Boy bomb The Little Boy bomb was the first nuclear weapon to be used in warfare. It was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, by the United States. The bomb had an explosive yield of approximately 15 kilotons of TNT, which means it released the same amount of energy as 15,000 tons of TNT. The Fat Man bomb The Fat Man bomb was the second nuclear weapon to be used in warfare. It was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, also by the United States. The bomb had an explosive yield of approximately 21 kilotons of TNT,
