2022 Saskatchewan, Canada, serial knife rampage

On September 4, 2022, a series of knife rampages at James Smith's Creations in south-central Canada and the nearby town of Weldon resulted in the deaths of more than 10 indigenous people. Damien Sanderson, the older brother of the brothers identified as the suspect in the case, was found dead, and his younger brother Miles Sanderson died of self-harm during his arrest, bringing the total number of deaths to 12.

Victims

The incident occurred on September 4th during the Labor Day holiday in Canada, causing national mourning. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has officially expressed his condolences and Parliament has opened early.

The James Smith Creation, an area of about 2,000 people, is a Canadian Native Reservation. Administratively, it belongs to the 100th district of James Smith, Saskatchewan, with an area of 72 km2, similar to the area of Ulleungdo Island.

Weldon is a small town 20 km southwest of James Smith CREATION, located about 30 minutes by car. It has about 200 inhabitants, and the majority of its inhabitants are Canadian natives.

The case began early in the morning on September 4, and the first report was filed at the James Smith Creation at around 5:40 a.m. Since then, police have been dispatched due to several reports from Weldon and other places, but the two suspects have fled after the crime.

The relationship between Damien Sanderson and Miles Sanderson was initially unknown, but the investigation confirmed that Damien was the older brother and Miles was the younger brother. Miles was also previously released on parole after committing other crimes, but was on the wanted list for violating conditions.

Police received a tip-off that they saw suspects in black Nissan Rogue SUVs in Lizaina around noon on the 4th, and based on that, they conducted a search operation in a wide range of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta. It has also sent a Dangerous Person alert to all mobile phones in your area.

The motive for the crime is not yet known, but Bobby Cameron of the Sovereign Aboriginal Union argued that the case could be a drug-related crime.

During an investigation into the incident, Damien was found hiding in the grass of a house in the James Smith Creation. He had a noticeable wound on his body, but it was not caused by self-harm, and his brother Miles was suspected of murdering his brother. Since one of the suspects was found close to the original crime scene, the direction of the investigation is expected to be revised depending on the possibility that the suspect's brothers fled far away.

At 2:07 p.m. on September 7, a man was reported standing with a knife in front of a house in Wakau, about 80 kilometers from the James Smith Creation. The man was identified as Miles Sanderson, and when police approached, he began his escape with a stolen white Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck. Police immediately issued an alert and chased Sanderson for 45 minutes. He was arrested near Rossdon while fleeing west, and suffered a major injury that was believed to have committed self-harm shortly before his arrest. Police transported Sanderson to the hospital, but eventually he died.

The case was closed when both suspects died, and the motive for the crime was forever unknown.
