The murder of a single room for a breakup notice in Cheonan, South Korea, in 2022
On January 12, 2022, at 9 p.m., a 27-year-old woman was killed in a studio apartment in Seobuk-gu, Cheonan-si, Chungcheongnam-do after receiving a farewell notice from Cho Hyun-jin.
This woman was previously dating Cho Hyun-jin but was notified of her breakup. On January 12, Cho Hyun-jin bought a weapon at a convenience store and entered a studio in Seongjeong-dong, Seobuk-gu, Cheonan-si, where the woman lives. There, Cho Hyun-jin locked the bathroom door and quarreled with the victim, stabbed her with a weapon at 9:40 p.m. and left there.
The victim was with her mother in a studio apartment. Cho Hyun-jin took the victim to the bathroom and committed a vicious crime of stabbing him, saying, "I have one last thing to say." Later, the victim was taken to a hospital, but eventually died.
Cho Hyun-jin fled quickly after the crime, but was arrested in his studio apartment about 1km away from the crime scene in 3 hours and 40 minutes.
According to the victim's sister's post on the Nate edition, on the night of January 11, the day before the incident, Cho Hyun-jin called the victim's mother and asked her to come to Cheonan to help her in the right way because the victim spent a lot of money and was emotionally anxious. Accordingly, the victim's mother went up to a studio apartment in Seongjeong-dong, Cheonan on the 12th.
However, when she found out that "Cho Hyun-jin stayed at her sister's house for more than two months, paid rent, food, and gas for her car with her sister's card, and notified her of the breakup several times when she was in financial difficulties," she said. At first, Hyunjin Cho understood and took out his luggage.
In the meantime, the victim went out with her mother for a while to pay back the money she borrowed. The victim's mother said from the person who lent the money, "When the victim received a call from Cho Hyun-jin, her hands trembled and she was in a state of anxiety, such as answering the phone." He also said, "It's better to say goodbye because Cho Hyun-jin is weird."
Cho Hyun-jin, who came to his room while organizing his luggage, went into the bathroom with the victim to talk to him one last time. Then, he came out in the middle of the room, drank water, and calmly talked to the victim's mother, who was looking for a moving center in the room. Shortly after Cho Hyun-jin entered the bathroom again, the victim shouted and said, "Mom, call the police! I'm going to die!" she cried, and when my mother knocked on the locked door, she said, "Mom, I'm going to die! Help!" he shouted. And he said, "My mother immediately called the police, so I shouted to come out, and Cho Hyun-jin, who opened the door, ran away."
However, in the bathroom, there was a victim who had already been stabbed several times in the abdomen. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital by police and paramedics who received a report, but lost his life.
On January 14, two days after the criminal was arrested, a message titled "Call for the disclosure of the identity of a male perpetrator in his 20s in the murder of his ex-girlfriend in a studio apartment in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do" was posted on the Blue House petition bulletin board. The petition has received more than 100,000 consent as of the 18th. On January 19, Cho Hyun-jin's personal information was disclosed under the suspect's personal information disclosure system.
On January 21, the police sent Cho Hyun-jin to the Cheonan branch of the Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office. On February 9, Cho Hyun-jin was arrested and charged with murder. In addition, Cho Hyun-jin visited his girlfriend's house and secured a statement that he intended to kill her.
On March 7, 2022, prosecutors sought Cho Hyun-jin's life imprisonment and 20 years of location tracking electronics in the first trial. At the trial, Cho Hyun-jin said in front of the presiding judge and the victim's bereaved family, "I'm sorry. It's strange," he said, halfheartedly.
In the first trial held on April 4, the court sentenced Cho Hyun-jin to 23 years in prison and ordered an additional five years of probation. The bereaved families, including the victim's mother, protested loudly. In response, the prosecution appealed.
While writing a letter of apology, Cho Hyun-jin deeply reflected on the crime, but he did not properly reflect on the crime with the content of criticizing the victim. Cho Hyun-jin claimed that the victim committed the murder on the grounds that swearing at his dead parents was accumulated.
On August 16, the prosecution also demanded Cho Hyun-jin to serve a life sentence in the second trial.
On September 27, the second trial sentenced him to 30 years in prison, an additional seven years compared to the first trial. In addition, an additional 15 years of positioning electronics have been ordered. However, the probation disposition sentenced in the first trial was dismissed. Cho Hyun-jin's refusal to reflect was recognized as a reason for aggravating sentencing, which included his unfortunate situation and criticizing the victim while submitting a letter of apology.
Since then, Cho Hyun-jin has not appealed, and his sentence has been confirmed.
